Talk 1

How expensive is punctuality? – Using data to manage track maintenance projects for SBB
Daniel Auvinet, SBB
Dr. Axel Obermeier, D ONE

The talk tells about the journey of SBB (specifically, within maintenance projects) towards data-driven insights and optimisation:

– predicting booking volume
– predicting project costs
– cost attribution for interrelated drivers
– learn from the data to generate cost-saving suggestions
– optimise project selection

Biography: Daniel Auvinet
Daniel graduated with a master in electronics, working at Airbus and other industrials, before moving to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in 2013. He integrated the track maintenance project steering platform and initiated data driven analyses to identify hidden cost drivers and reduce their impact. This approach is now being implemented in other infrastructure departments at SBB and will continue to be improved through exploiting data analytics and machine-learning algorithms.

Biography: Dr. Axel Obermeier
Axel received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in 2015, where he developed the first algorithm with optimal complexity for non-elliptic problems. Axel joined the team in 2017, where he specialises in data analysis, data modelling, as well as design and implementation of algorithms and computing infrastructure.

Talk 2

Data Strategy & Data Science at Migros – An Overview
Bojan Skerlak

As Senior Data Scientist Bojan is responsible to develop value add to the different business units of Migros. Bojan will provide an overview on how Migros implements and runs its data strategy.

Biography:  Dr. Bojan Skerlak
Bojan graduated from the ETH Zurich with a Master’s degree in physics in 2009 and continued with his PhD in atmospheric physics and dynamics. After almost one year as postdoctoral researcher, where he developed an algorithm for automated identification and quantification of tropopause folds from long-term global meteorological data, he started as data scientist at Migros in 2015. Furthermore, Bojan founded the startup Škerlak Analytics + Robotics last year next to his job at Migros. There, Bojan and his team offer a wide range of services related to robotics, A.I. and data science in general.

Data-Driven Business Models: Meet-an-Expert Sessions

New offering for members: distinct meet-an-expert sessions, where you are able to meet an expert to discuss emerging questions in the realm of “Data-driven Business Models”. D ONE and the Institute of Technology Management (University of St. Gallen) are offering each two slots of about 30 minutes to discuss problems and provide first hints or propositions to solve these. The sessions will take place from 15.30 – 16.30 before the Expert-group event.

To reserve one of these slots, please contact Patrick Buck (patrick.buck@d-one.ai) of D ONE or Philipp Osterrieder (philipp.osterrieder@unisg.ch) from the University of St. Gallen with a brief summary of your situation and problem. You may choose your favorite expert, or we assign the one with the best fit to your question.

Do not hesitate to reach us through mail or telephone and profit from the possibility to meet an expert as part of the Data+Service Alliance. However, be aware that only four slots are available, therefore, first come first serve.
